With Thanksgiving still visible in the rearview mirror, it was only two weeks ago that we were reflecting on the people in our lives for whom we’re most grateful. But what about the places we’re thankful for? I don’t mean a warm bed or comfy couch – although those are top contenders. I’m talking about the places in your community – or beyond – that enrich your daily life.
Personally, we love quiet mornings, walking to work – coffee in hand – and watching the dogs run by. Or lazy afternoon strolls with a best friend and an ice cream cone. Or finding some shade and unpacking a bag of drinks and snacks.
None of these favourite activities would be possible without Toronto’s brilliant parks and green spaces.
A 2.4 hectare park near Dupont Dufferin Streets. It features a ball diamond (which is lit at night), two outdoor tennis courts, a wading pool and two children’s playgrounds. The Dovercourt Boys and Girls Club is located at the northeast corner of the park, and there’s street parking all around the outskirts.
Neighbours love the park because it’s not as well-known and often overlooked in favour of larger parks nearby like Christie Pits and Dufferin Grove. But it seems that the local community prefers it that way, as the Dovercourt Park feels more like their own little secret! One resident called it a ‘neighhbourhood oasis’!
Here’s what some folks have said about the park:
“Dovercourt Park is only really known to locals and I really like it that way. It’s like your neighbourhood kids schoolyard combined with a tiny version of Trinity Bellwoods.
-Kids have two playgrounds based on age, a swing area, a wading pool and larger toys from the community to be shared (kitchen, cars etc.).
-Seniors love it in the morning and use it as an area for their morning exercise.
-Athletes can play or watch baseball every now and then. There is also a tennis court.
-Pokémon hunters love it due to the number of pokestops.
-Great place for dog walkers, especially when there are no baseball games in play.”
“Awesome park to come and watch the day go by. Lots of people come and go. Super dog-friendly. Popular for the kiddos with a playground and wadding pool adjacent the field. Washroom facilities are available too and a tennis court. Plus a fire pit and more green space closer to the community centre and gardens. 10 out of 10.”
“Beautiful area to walk your doggo or chill on the grass with some friends. There’s a fire pit you can rent as well, tennis courts, splash pad, baseball diamond… Great neighbourhood.”
” I have been testing out different tennis courts across the city. It’s always a bit of a gambit, but of the courts we’ve used thus far, I would say these ones really made an impression on me. They are well-maintained and nestled in a good little spot contained within a quiet residential area. I wouldn’t say they are a hidden gem because it seems they are quite popular—on a Monday afternoon, we were among 3 to 5 groups waiting to play. The vibes were relaxed, friendly for beginners, and the people were among the nicest crowds we’ve met, both friendly and mindful of sharing the courts so every group got playing time”
“Him: “Hey! On my run, I saw a secret park by our house!”
Me: “Yes, I know. Justin once ordered a pizza to there. There are fire pits.”
Him: “Next picnic!”
We did have our next picnic there, and we met a pug named Fishstick. Soon more friends joined our blanket and we played cards and drank lemonade and watched the softball game and listened to kids squeal as they played on the little Fisher Price cars. You know the ones that are essentially Flinstone cars come to life? They look fun, and apparently, at this park, it’s understood that people keep their larger outdoor toys there and let all the kids share. Very Canadian.”
“I love this park. If you’re not on vacation it is a great way to enjoy a staycation. It reminds e of my child growing up on the Lakeshore in Etobicoke. Family orientated, quiet and just a great way to spend some time in the sun. If you have children it’s a great place to keep them cool in a small pool and if you enjoy tennis there are courts available for your enjoyment.”
Thank you Toronto!

Since 1989, I’ve steered my career through a real estate market crash and burn; survived a slow painful cross-country recession; completed an M.E.S. graduate degree from York University called ‘Planning Housing Environments’; executed the concept, sales & marketing of multiple new condo and vintage loft conversions; and guided hundreds of clients through the purchase and sale of hundreds of freehold and condominium dwellings across the original City of Toronto. From a gritty port industrial city into a glittering post-industrial global centre, I’ve navigated the ebbs and flows of a property market as a consistent Top Producer.
