Splashing It Up At Berczy Park’s Dog Fountain

Architecture, City Living, St. Lawrence Market

Dog owners will tell you that their furry friend is a bona fide family member in every way – and we couldn’t agree more!

In fact, dogs and cats are often top-of-mind when folks are creating a house-hunting wish list!

And while condo living is ideal for young urbanites on the go, it can be challenging to find a building that is not only pet-friendly and fabulous, but is well-positioned with regards to pet-friendly amenities – like quick and easy access to green space that suits their needs.

And their dog’s daily “needs”, if you catch my drift.

If you live near the St. Lawrence Market or Moss Park, we just posted about David Crombie Park, which has a great run for dogs.

One truly unique place to walk the pup is Berczy, which has all the trappings of a sublime urban park: lots of green space, trees for shade, and benches to pause and enjoy the view! It’s nestled comfortably in a triangle between Front Street East, Wellington Street East and Scott Street.

I think Berczy Park is particularly beautiful in autumn when the fall foliage matches the brick exteriors of the surrounding buildings; the facade of the Gooderham Building – a heritage ‘flatiron’ building – provides a particularly pretty view!

But the real draw in this park is the two-tiered fountain that features 27 cast iron dogs and a giant bone. For good measure, there is a sole cast-iron cat thrown into the mix. People come from all over downtown to sit in this urban oasis, including dog owners who love to chat and let their dogs socialize too!

(There is no off-leash area here, but you only have to walk 8 minutes east to take advantage of the dog park at David Crombie Park!)

The unique fountain was designed by Quebec landscape architect Claude Cormier and installed in 2017.

Water arcs out of the mouths of these cast iron dogs, much to the delight of the furry friends that frequent this fountain.  It’s a great place for dogs to refresh with a drink of water and maybe sniff a few tails. It’s pretty popular with pet owners living in nearby condo buildings!

And it’s not just dogs and their owners who love it – designers do too! All kinds can appreciate its unique lines and space plan; it was even given a prestigious landscape design award!

It also hosts events like holiday Cavalcade Of Lights, and is a great place to watch the Santa Claus Parade!

Calling all pet-loving influencers! This fountain is a GREAT ‘Insta’ moment to share with friends and followers!

This fountain keeps up with current events too. It gets decked out with festive decorations during the holiday season. (The lovable cast iron canines were even spotted with masks on during COVID-19!)

Rounding out the park is a bottle-filling station, cafe tables and chairs (for outdoor lunches for enjoying a coffee), even more sculptures, and a map of a Downtown Discovery Walk.
