Have you ever imagined living in a tiny home? Could you thrive in an unconventional abode with limited square footage but all the essentials? If that’s an adventure you’d relish, we have big news for you!
A Canadian developer, Plummet Properties, received approvals from the City in January to build what is being called “a commune for tiny and unconventional housing” in downtown Toronto at Spadina Avenue and Adelaide Street. Slated to rise about 16 storeys, the completed project will consist of three interconnected “dwell trees”, which are steel-frame structures fitted with lightweight 12′ x 22′ concrete pads on each of a series of arms. This array of bases will each serve as a foundation for someone to cultivate their “tiny domestic dream”.
According to a press release by the developer, interested parties will enter into a long-term lease for the exclusive use of one of the concrete pads, where they can then choose to erect a tiny home, place an RV, or even deposit a shipping container to become their new address! Pretty neat, eh?! According to their website, the pre-sale price is $500/month, inclusive of the cost of craning the home to its rented resting place.

“Typically, the width of most tiny homes ranges from 7 to 8 feet wide. This keeps them within the standard limits for safe and easy road transportation (max width on the road without requiring a special permit is 8.5 feet). And most RVs, excluding slide-outs, typically have a standard width of around 8 feet (96 inches), though some can be up to 8.5 feet (102 inches) wide. So we designed the platforms to accommodate this, plus a small space for the residents to set up a couple of lawn chairs to take in the view“.
(The RV owners would be allowed to extend their slide-outs as long as they accepted the developer would not be held liable in the event of an accident. Being open air, the developer saw no reason why a resident couldn’t enjoy a weenie roast or s’more night sitting out under the fluorescent neon glare.)
As for amenities – it ain’t swish – but isn’t that kind of the point? Each platform will include a hose bib with cold running water, a sewage tube connecting to the City sewer, and a 100 amp circuit panel. A cable and internet package will be available for an additional $50 a month.
Now that it’s entering the construction phase, media outlets are calling it a direct – and creative – response to the condominium market crisis. This is certainly true, but in an on-air interview, the head of Plummet revealed that the impetus for this commune was actually desperation rather than ambition or idealism.
As he tells it, his firm had just completed the steel framing for a tower of micro condos when all but one of his investors called to say they couldn’t close on their $3000/square foot units. Despite being able to legally retain their deposits, he was still facing bankruptcy and homelessness. Like something out of a movie, in a desperate move, he camped out front of City Hall for a week before Mayor Olivia Chow agreed to meet him. Together, they brainstormed this tiny home project and fast-tracked approvals. (The developer intends to live in his Escalade and work as Night Security until the real estate market improves.)
In a recent social media post, the head of Plummet announced they would be offering a ‘Bus-Sized Upgrade’ to interested parties looking for an extra few feet of room. After Trump signed an executive order to dismantle Department of Education, the Plummet brokered a deal to buy up school buses for $100 a pop. Why not?
