Although summer 2020 is unofficially the season of the staycation, there is no reason that you can’t travel the world, at least gastronomically speaking. And a visit to the divine Italian bakery Sud Forno on Queen St. West does for your taste buds what a visit to an Italian piazza does for the soul!
And what’s at the centre of this delectable experience? The fundamental approach to authentic, painstakingly perfect bread, which is often the cornerstone of great Italian meals. The aroma of loaves rising in the oven wafts through the air and draw you inside.
This grab-and-go bakery features made-to-order sandwiches, Roman-style pizza, salads and pastries. Lots of pastries!

It’s the perfect spot to grab a quick lunch, or to pick up a crusty loaf to enjoy at home. If you’d care to eat in, pull up a stool at the counter facing the window that provides the perfect perch for people-watching. Or, if you’re there with a group, head upstairs to commune at the long table and eat together ‘famiglia’ style!
All of the sandwiches looked delicious but I couldn’t resist trying the Panino al Salame: delicious salami, cambezola cheese and artisan lettuce on pane integrale. The perfectly salty salami and the rich/creamy/tangy cambezola was an unexpectedly perfect combination. The bread was super fresh with the perfect amount of chewiness in the centre and crunch in the crust to perfectly balance the rich fillings.
It is a perfect sandwich albeit one that demands to be followed by something sweet. Luckily, the beautiful pastries take centre stage at Sud Forno. It was a very tough decision but we settled on quite possibly the most adorable tiramisu we have ever seen. It was downright darling! We paired our dessert with an iced Americano to help fight off the after lunch blahs (a full selection of espresso based drinks are available). The tiramisu was a delicious end to a lovely lunch.
One of the best parts of this bakery (other than the food and drink of course) is the décor- which is rich and inviting- dark wood, lots of marble, including a stunning marble mosaic floor – and of course rows of glass display cases that give window shopping a whole new meaning!
The bread selection along the wall is almost overwhelming. Each offering looks and smells delicious making it hard to decide what one to bring home. We recommend coming back for multiple visits to try all of the sandwiches so you can sample each of the types of bread available. You owe it to yourself to be thorough. We are very much looking forward to coming back to try to the Stirata, a Roman style thick crust pizza. Homemade gelato is also available making Sud Forno a ‘must-stop’ this summer!
And what pairs with great Italian food? Great Italian wine, of course. Sud Forno has just opened up a wine shop on their second floor with an impressive flight of Italian wines. There is even a sommelier in-house to help you choose!
Sud Forno is a member of the Terroni family of restaurants. In fact, it is a few doors east of Terroni Queen, and their intimate dining room with Italian fare that is second to none. Terroni Queen was the family’s first eatery, with several other locations opening up over the last three decades.
