Of life’s simple pleasures, is there anything more enjoyable than a good meal at one of your favourite eateries? Having a spot close to home that you love adds extra comfort to the concept of comfort food.

That’s how we feel about La Carnita, where Mexican cuisine meets elevated street food. It’s refreshingly down-to-earth, and the atmosphere a little edgy, but complex flavour abounds! Have you visited their space in the Food District at Square One? Love it!

La Carnita offers great value in a great venue. It’s an excellent spot to dine with friends on Mexican fare while sipping on a craft beer or cocktails, at a reasonable price point. And given that it’s smack dab in the middle of a retail centre, means that it’s the perfect pause to recharge during your shopping.

La Carnita – and their reputation for outstanding tacos – generated a significant buzz in its early inception. It started as a pop-up restaurant a little over a decade ago, and because of a fan following, set up shop permanently at its College Street location in Toronto.

In its pop-up days, La Carnita offered a whole ‘street food’ experience, serving up incredible tacos worth lining up for (and many did!). Diners could also peruse a selection of limited-edition artwork, most of which is gritty and punchy. Music played a huge role in the overall vibe at these pop-ups as well, adding to an invigorating atmosphere where you were excited ‘n ready for your tastebuds to be titillated! It was a full experience, with the crowning moment being noshing drool-worthy tacos!

In the years that followed the opening of the College Street location, their popularity soared, and now La Carnita is satiating hungry urbanites at five hot spots across the GTA! (And we recommend experiencing any – or all – of them!)

The Square One version of La Carnita is part of a massive food hall – the Food District – with an intimate and industrially-styled dining room; the design theme is a nod to the street art characterizing its original locations. How gorgeous is that decor?!

The menu is comprised of gourmet-style nachos (our favourite!!), a host of tacos and tostadas, fajitas and of course, churros for dessert.

One of the better-known dishes here is the charred Mexican street corn, drizzled with crema and seasoned with ancho and other chilis. The husk is decoratively twisted, which looks cool and serves as a handle while eating this yummy treat.

While the flavour profile is certainly Mexican, there is some creative license taken here; for example, they fuse Asian-style flavours and ingredients into some of their dishes, making the food that much more unexpected and satisfying.

Fun music, a good beer & cocktail selection, and a gourmet-gritty aesthetic that’s a feast for the eyes complete their vibe, which is ‘fiesta’ with a capital F!
