If you know Urbaneer, you know we have a bit of a obsession problem when it comes to house, home and habitat. Show us an unusual floor plan, a clever renovation, a spectacular light fixture, or a paint colour with an absurdly poetic name and we’re instantly intrigued. So naturally, the arrival of the Fall Home Show, happening October 2nd to 4th at the Enercare Centre at Exhibition Place, has our attention. With more than 225 home and lifestyle vendors and experts gathered under one roof, it’s essentially a giant playground for anyone who has ever lost an entire evening looking at kitchens, bathrooms, furniture, finishes, gardens, gadgets, or things they did not know they desperately needed until five minutes ago.

There is also something rather perfect about a home show arriving just as Toronto slips into autumn. Patio furniture gets covered, windows get closed, and suddenly we’re spending enough time indoors to notice that the dining room light is hideous, the kitchen could really use some love, and that “temporary” decorating decision from six years ago may have overstayed its welcome. The Fall Home Show brings together renovation ideas, decorating inspiration, smart-home products, contractors and expert advice, along with free design and renovation consultations and presentations on the Main Stage. So whether you’re contemplating a full-scale overhaul or simply trying to figure out why one room in your home has never quite behaved itself, there should be plenty of ideas to steal — respectfully, of course.

For us, that curiosity goes hand in hand with real estate. We have always believed that a property is only the starting point; what makes it compelling is how people shape it to suit the way they actually live. Sometimes that means preserving the quirks and character of an older Toronto house. Sometimes it means squeezing astonishing functionality out of a compact condo. And sometimes it means deciding that yes, the wildly impractical statement light fixture is absolutely essential because it makes you ridiculously happy every time you walk into the room. Good design is part practicality, part problem-solving and, ideally, at least a little bit of theatre — which is one reason we never tire of seeing what designers, renovators and homeowners are dreaming up next.

So if your idea of an entertaining weekend includes wandering through displays, opening cabinet doors you have no business opening, stroking countertops, interrogating contractors, and quietly wondering whether your home could accommodate one more fabulous thing, you’ll be in excellent company. The Fall Home Show runs Friday, October 2nd through Sunday, October 4th at the Enercare Centre, and we’ll be making the rounds too, looking for smart ideas, clever solutions and whatever happens to stop us in our tracks. After all, when you’re as house-and-home obsessed as we are, calling it “market research” is a wonderfully useful loophole.
(See you there!!)

Since 1989, I’ve steered my career through a real estate market crash and burn; survived a slow painful cross-country recession; completed an M.E.S. graduate degree from York University called ‘Planning Housing Environments’; executed the concept, sales & marketing of multiple new condo and vintage loft conversions; and guided hundreds of clients through the purchase and sale of hundreds of freehold and condominium dwellings across the original City of Toronto. From a gritty port industrial city into a glittering post-industrial global centre, I’ve navigated the ebbs and flows of a property market as a consistent Top Producer. And I remain as passionate about it today as when I started.
