After what feels like eons of shovels, scaffolding and earnest promises, Toronto’s Eglinton Crosstown LRT — now officially dubbed Line 5 Eglinton — finally opened to the public on February 8, 2026.
Yep, that’s right: the shiny new light rail line is carrying passengers across midtown Toronto, from Mount Dennis in the west to Kennedy Station in the east, with 25 stops along its 19-kilometre stretch. For anyone who ever joked that the project would finish in their retirement, this is the day we celebrated the impossible becoming real.

Toronto transit nerds, casual riders, and curious locals alike lined up in the frigid February air to be among the first aboard, chanting likethey were in the stands at a football game. Some even camped out — yes, really camped out — to secure boarding bragging rights. It was less ‘ribbon-cutting grandeur’ and more ‘impromptu winter party’, complete with hot drinks courtesy of a local cafe trying to turn commuter traffic into new fans.

Of course, you can’t talk about the Crosstown without acknowledging the saga that preceded this moment. Fifteen years of construction, countless delays and delays to the delays, and many awkward meetings later, the TTC has rolled out the line in what they’re calling a “phased intro service.” That means no confetti cannons or collectible slaps on the back just yet — but literal free rides on opening day and a real chance to finally see if this thing actually saves time. Initial reports say plenty of commuters are already shaving minutes off their journeys between stations, which is basically the transit equivalent of discovering coffee before cram school.

So here we are! A brand-new piece of transit infrastructure that’s equal parts relief, triumph and “I can’t believe this is actually running.” Local leaders were on hand for ceremonial plaque unveilings, riders were bundled up and ecstatic, and now Torontonians across the city are taking it step by step — meter by metre, LRT car by LRT car — into a future that once seemed perpetually just around the corner.
