A terrific article was posted on the Huffington Post on July 31st by Daniel Tencer which explores the emerging dominance of the Canadian housing industry as an employer. Entitled “Twisted Economy: Canada Ditches Manufacturing, Builds Condos Instead”, Mr. Tencer’s article outlines how manufacturing jobs have been in decline while construction jobs have increased. As the employment dynamics shift, naturally there’s concern that should the housing market see a correction there could be a surge in unemployment. Which begs the question: “Can that skill set be transferred to other lines of work?”
As unemployment continues to plague other nations worldwide, perhaps those of us in the housing industry should be exploring alternatives should our marketplace transition.
