Joie de Vivre at Le Neuf Cafe on Clarence Square

King West / Niagara / Liberty Village

Living in a busy city like Toronto, sometimes it feels like we go through life on autopilot. It’s difficult to capture the Parisian art of 'Joie de Vivre' when we’re rushing from meeting to meeting, or fighting the rush hour traffic. But maybe the secret is baby steps. If you’re in King West and need a break from the congestion, stop by Le Neuf Cafe for a jolt of Parisian inspired style, delicious baked goods (both savoury and sweet) or a relaxing drink. This charming little cafe and patisserie is located at 9 Clarence Square across from Clarence Square Park and steps from King Street and Spadina Avenue.

Because the cafe is tucked away from the noise of the traffic and rattle of streetcars, it’s just the spot to relax and escape with a cafe-au-lait, an espresso, a buttery pastry or even and freshly-made French crepe. Of course, there are days when a glass of champagne is more fitting. Le Neuf Cafe has this covered as well.

This delightful cafe and bistro definitely captures an authentic Parisian vibe with the gorgeous arched molding, hanging teardrop light fixtures, marble counters, Victorian armchairs and colourful tables. If you prefer to spend your time enjoying the last days of warm weather, the patio has an ample amount of tables that look out at the enchanting Clarence Square Park. For dog owners that frequent the Clarence Square dog park, this is a great spot to pick up a warm bevy while the pup is busy chasing the ball – or squirrels.

But it’s not just about “the look”. The proprietor is originally from France and spent many years operating a bar back in Paris before she moved to Toronto, for love! She not only wanted for the cafe to feel Parisian, she also wanted its offerings to taste as they do in Paris, so she hired a baker from France to make all the delicious pastries. Whether you’re running in for a croissant on-the-go or enjoying a weekend brunch, it’s all about quality. And whether your weakness is the sweet or the savoury, it's hard to go wrong here. Le Neuf also offers a daily selection of soups, sandwiches and salads. On weekends, omelettes and other eggy creations are on the roster.

This particular afternoon, we stole a few quiet minutes between meetings to enjoy a rich cafe au lait and catch up on some reading. What a perfect place for this latest selection! You just can't go wrong with an afternoon here. It's just the spot to get away from it all, even if it's just for a moment.
