Harbord Bakery & Calandria In Harbord Village

Annex / South Annex / Seaton Village, City Living, College Street / Little Italy

Today, I’m sharing one of my favourite stops in my day-to-day-life in the city: Harbord Bakery & Calandria.

In operation since 1929, the Kosower Family took over the business in 1945 and the rest – as they say – is history!

Serving the Harbord Village & Annex communities, this is the go-to spot for delicious challahs, cakes, and rolls. Harbord Bakery has also become a space for friends and neighbours to accidentally congregate. Whenever I go there’s always a group who are chatting it up, just like the TV series Cheers –> it feels like “a place where everyone knows your name”!

I have a big sweet tooth, which I guess is a birthright when your surname is Fudge. However, it makes riding my bike past Harbord Bakery without stopping extremely challenging! Sometimes I succeed, and sometimes I end up steering my bike with one hand while the other one is shoving a Eccles Cakes in my mouth!

I’m also a big fan of their quiche. For years I ate them at Kalendar Cafe on College at Euclid thinking they were made on-site, only to discover that they’re a Harbord Bakery specialty!! I almost always choose the broccoli quiche, because the tasty veggies blend perfectly with the other flavours!

Looking for more than baked goods? They’ve got you covered! Harbord Bakery also has an additional department called “Calandria” where they offer take-out meals and catering options for all your birthday or simkha needs. You will find salads, sandwiches, pasta, chicken dishes… and the list goes on! Plus there’s a curated selection of pantry products!

I’m happy to share that Harbord Bakery is now recognized as an official Toronto landmark, and exactly a decade ago, the street south of the bakery was declared “Kosower Lane” in honour of the Kosowers that began the family bakery. Their daughter, Susan Wisniewski, couldn’t be more delighted! In the December 25th, 2011 edition of the Globe and Mail, Wisniewski shares: “It just makes me feel so warm – like my parents are still here – every time I see that laneway sign […]”

Now it’s your turn to discover the delicious treats that await you at Harbord Bakery. If going by bike, don’t follow my lead – eat your treats before you jump back on!! 🙂

Happy Eating!
