Celebrating The Walking Life In The St. Lawrence Market Neighbourhood

We love the St. Lawrence Market neighbourhood! Visually arresting, value-added, and conveniently connected, revel in its charming streetscapes and heritage architecture, its eclectic collection of services, shops & cafes, and its centre-of-it-all accessibility.

Back in the late 1800s, the Town of York – of which St. Lawrence Market was a part – was home to people who worked in the area, traded, sold, socialized, attended church, and, on occasion, formed secret alliances and planned rebellions and uprisings. Fast-forward to the 21st century, and you have a versatile enclave where old and new coexist. There is a collection of century-old three and four-storey red brick buildings built on a human scale, which grounds this neighbourhood in their character and patina. Since the 1980s, residential infill has gently evolved from mid to higher densities, but it’s never been at the expense of livability. The neighbourhood is thoughtfully scaled, with many interconnected green spaces and grand sky vistas. It’s a vibrant destination that has a heartbeat and a soul. These are the intangible qualities that make this location so magnetic.

One of the many reasons to love the St.Lawrence Market neighbourhood is its unparalleled convenience. While many neighbourhoods in the city offer excellent transportation and amenities, this pedestrian village stands out for its walkability and the sheer beauty of its streets. The picturesque old streets make running daily errands a delight. With a Shopper Drug Mart on the ground floor of 3 Market Street, an LCBO up the block, and a Metro just 2 blocks away, you have everything you need at your doorstep. And why go to Metro when you can shop at the diverse and dynamic St. Lawrence Market, with its fresh produce and specialty foods?

Though there is a bushel of inspiring and delicious places to explore, we’ll name a few, including Cafe 260 and the George Street Diner on Richmond Street, Terroni (one of our faves!) on Adelaide, and the Craft Beer Market. If you have respect for those who truly know their craft, dip into Bier Markt for a rich ‘bier haus’ experience. We also love to line up for brunch at Waffle Specialists, Le Petit Dejeuner, or settle in for an after-work cocktail and nosh at the Carbon Bar.

And for those who love design, you’re smack dab in the centre of oodles of design retailers and art galleries! Walk through the Sunday Antique Market to find some keepsakes and objects d’arts, browse modern furniture pieces at EQ3, or wander spaces like Gallery260 or The Market Gallery.

…By Foot, Ferry, Plane, Train, Uber, Or Bike!

No other location in the city offers proximity to here, there, and everywhere, like the St. Lawrence Market Neighbourhood. With the Financial & Entertainment Districts to the west, Yonge Street, Church Street Village & Cabbagetown to the north, Corktown and the Distillery District to the east, and Harbourfront & Lake Ontario to the south, you’re steps from excellent purveyors of food, finery & furniture, the best of arts & culture, and lush lakeside green spaces for recreation and respite.

1 Market Street is so central that you’re a 10-minute stroll to Union Station for Go Transit, Via Rail, the Line 1 subway and the Union Pearson Express (UP Express), which whisks you from Union Station to Pearson Airport in 25 minutes, with trains departing every 15 minutes. It’s a 6-minute bike ride to the Toronto Island’s Ferry Terminal that takes you to 332 hectares (820 acres) of land spread over 14 islands, the three main ones being Ward’s Island, Centre Island, and Hanlan’s Point.  It’s a 7-minute Uber to the Billy Bishop Island Airport, where Porter Airlines will fly you to your destination of choice.

Suppose you need to get across the city. All your transportation needs are covered with the 24-hour 504 King Streetcar just three blocks north, which connects you directly to the Yonge/University subway lines and the GO and Via Rail trains at Union Station. Do you prefer to bike? There’s a Bike Share station situated in the Green P covered parking area in the complex beside the lobby. And if you need to make an IKEA run or haul bulk groceries, there’s also a ZipCar pick-up in that same parking area.

Imagine a warm Sunday morning in May. The sound of music from the buskers outside the market drifts in through your window. The broad brick-paved sidewalks are filled with a leisurely stream of foot traffic. The air is filled with the enticing aroma of fresh produce, baked goods, and roasting coffee. The neighbourhood’s abundant parks, with their mature trees and urban wildlife, provide a peaceful retreat that leads to Lake Ontario, offering ample opportunities to relax and socialize.

Wouldn’t living amongst all that beauty and energy be amazing?

Market Wharf II

Completed in 2013, this mixed-use development at 1 Market Street rises 34 storeys and houses 357 units in the base and tower combined. They range in size from 379 square feet to 1870 square feet, and each falls into one of four categories: Market Flats (smaller, more affordable single-storey suites), Market Towns (two-storey urban townhomes with backyard terraces atop the podium), Water Suites (single-storey suites that enjoy spectacular lake and city views), and Penthouses.

The building offers a noteworthy collection of shared amenities, including a concierge, guest suites ($140 per night), fitness & yoga rooms, a party room, a cinema room, a meeting room, and a communal sundeck. Plus, Market Wharf residents enjoy the convenience of having a Tangerine Bike Share station and a ZipCar pickup situated in the Green P covered parking area in the complex beside the lobby (with a second much-larger Green P pay-parking located across the street). How awesome is that?

If your family includes a four-pawed member, rest assured that the building is very pet-friendly; there are no restrictions on size or breed (but limited to 2 pets per unit). Plus, dog owners with busy schedules will love that David Crombie Dog Park is just two blocks from home (a 4 minute walk away!)

A Sunset Suite

This efficient suite boasts an intelligent space plan and superior attention to detail. Upon entering, you’ll find the entrance hall equipped with an extended wall of closets capable of storing even the largest collection of seasonal wear! Turning the corner past a discreet laundry closet and a pristine 4-piece bath, the suite unfolds into a combined kitchen/diner with the lounge area just beyond. Thanks to the open sightline and a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows, you can enjoy your personal ‘bright lights, big city’ urban panorama – including a coveted CN Tower view – from almost anywhere in the suite!

Able to accommodate an island with seating or a small table and banquet for dining, this combined kitchen/dining zone is well-suited to fans of efficiency. The stainless steel appliances are well-situated and the cabinetry & fixtures are well-appointed, ensuring that all of your culinary creation (and dreaded clean-up) will be done in style! So pop that Reisling and invite your besties over for some charcuterie!

The adjacent open-concept living area is where you’ll likely spend most of your time, either taking in the view, watching TV & scrolling Insta, chatting over coffee, or enjoying a couple of cocktails with your nearest and dearest. It offers walk-out access to an ample west-facing balcony where the sunsets are sublime! As you likely know, outdoor space is at a premium in the City, and this glorious panoramic perch easily accommodates all the accoutrements of outdoor living – lounging, dining, and space to cultivate your green thumb! Right off the living area, you’ll find the sleeping sanctuary; it’s your little haven from the bustle of urban living. It boasts plenty of storage and a second walk-out to that gorgeous panoramic perch!

This central St. Lawrence Market offering combines urban sensibility and convenience, making it one of our favourite buildings in this neighbourhood! And monthly maintenance fees are only $401.11/month (inclusive of water, building insurance, & common elements) – how great is that?!

So, if you’re a ‘make-it-happen’ millennial looking for a swag pad in one of Toronto’s most historic neighbourhoods, a busy professional couple who doesn’t have time for the maintenance of a house with a yard, or a downsizing Zoomer seeking turn-key swish in proximity to your downtown-dwelling kids (and grandkids), these dare-to-dream downtown digs are definitely worthy of your consideration!
