The Distillery District’s New ‘Winter Village’ Is Open!

City Living

It was a bleak September day nearly two months ago when it was announced that – after a decade of tradition – there would be no Toronto Christmas Market this year. Oh, the Christmisery!!

The cancellation was yet another disheartening blow in what has already been a bleak and fatiguing year, but with the second wave of COVID-19 hitting the GTA particularly hard, the announcement was far from surprising (and a regrettable but smart choice). After all, during its six-week run, the internationally-acclaimed Christmas Market drew upwards of 700,000 people to Toronto’s historic Distillery District in 2019, making it all but impossible to practice social distancing under the current strict pandemic protocols.

For a while, it felt like we’d been royally Scrooged, but I should have remembered… it’s impossible to quash something as hopeful, joyful, and resilient as holiday spirit!!

What made attending the Toronto Christmas Market such a magical tradition? For me, it was standing in awe of the enormous twinkling tree with over 60,000 decorations, wandering snow-covered streets by lamplight, peeking in enchanting shop windows, sipping hot apple cider, and making merry with loved ones next to crackling hearths. What if I told you that most – if not all – of that fun can still be had this year?!

This month, if you follow those familiar cobblestone streets, you won’t find a people-packed market, but rather a picturesque Winter Village!

Will there still be an impossibly large tree and gorgeous festive decor? Sure will! How about canopies of twinkling lights, lots of mirthful music, and plenty of unique shopping experiences? Yes to all!

The website goes on to say “all of your favourite Distillery District shops, galleries, and restaurants are open, offering a unique blend of specialty gifts, art, cuisine and fashion!” (Some have even extended their patios to accommodate more patrons.)

And while there won’t be any live performers or vendor cabins (and the tree lighting was done privately), we sincerely appreciate that the organizers of this winter wonderland have channelled all of the hope and excitement of the season into providing a memorable, magical – and safe – experience for us! Does your heart feel like it just grew three sizes? Mine does!

All of the proprietors of this event – from the general manager of the Distillery District to the shopkeepers and restaurant owners – “remain committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment in compliance with provincial health regulations.”

Several safety measures and precautions have been taken throughout the neighbourhood, including signage to promote and remind of physical distancing, increased frequency of cleaning, regular use of medical-grade cleaning products, and hand sanitizer supplied throughout. Furthermore, they will be monitoring the pedestrian traffic, and they may temporarily close entrances at certain times to ease crowding.
