Happy Easter!
When you’re a realtor who finds Novelty Architecture amusing, it was only a matter of time the opportunity would present itself to incorporate The Basket Building into a post. And what could be more obvious than using it for Easter? Built for The Longaberger Company, an American manufacturer and distributor of handcrafted maple wood baskets and other home and lifestyle products, the building is the old corporate headquarters on Ohio’s State Route 16. A local landmark (obviously) – it took the shape of the company’s biggest seller, the “Medium Market Basket”.
Incidentally, given this is a real estate blog, today’s lesson is that Novelty Architecture is a bad decision if you’re thinking about future resale value. The moment a property is taste-specific you’re instantly risking how many prospective purchasers will consider your place appealing. And if those taste-specific custom features are comprehensive – and more than just surface cosmetics – potentially making them costly to change, your choices could be financially devastating.
This is precisely what happened to The Longaberger Company. According to Columbus Business First, the building and surrounding 21 acres sold for just $1.2 million, a fraction of its appraised value. Not only that, it sold to the buyer who was most likely to pay the highest sum for the property, being the Historic Newark Basket Company.
Fortunately, what we have in our Easter Basket for your consideration is tasteful, not taste-specific.
