Have you ever walked by plaques like this on the lawn or exterior of a Toronto building?
Well, if you have an interest is tracking down historical properties, there's an easier way than wandering by them by chance!
Compiled by Heritage Preservation Services, the Heritage Register is a list which identifies Toronto's heritage buildings. The Register (previously known as the Inventory of Heritage Properties) was started in 1973 and lists approximately 7,000 properties. 7,000!!! It includes well-known landmark buildings as well as private homes.
Heritage Preservation Services recommends to City Council those properties that should be included on the Heritage Register or designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. The recommendations are based on criteria that relate to architecture, history, and neighbourhood context. Their inclusion on the Register is a clear statement that the City would like to see the heritage attributes of these properties preserved.
Now there is a search tool that makes identifying these heritage properties a LOT easier! All you have to do is visit the Heritage Preservation section on the City of Toronto website.
This is what it looks like – pretty simple, right?
Once you search and identify a property, you simply click on it to see a brief history of the property! Easy peasy!
