Midtown Torontonians know it’s not all about the downtown core when it comes discovering haut hotspots and rad restos!
With prime commercial space in such high demand south of Bloor, eateries, boutiques, and other urban amenities have more and more frequently been seeking space northward! In fact, nowadays, on-trend ventures are drawing crowds and finding success by situating north of St. Clair. Avoiding expensive rent, packed parking, and too many tourists – frustrations that go hand in hand with the downtown core – are just a few more perks of embracing the magic of midtown! Easily accessible (especially with the Eglinton LRT on the way!) and becoming a hub in its own right, Yonge and Eglinton is the place to be!
I love this part of the city more and more.
It feels cleaner and better kept than the cracked and litter-strewn sidewalks that line much of downtown. Yonge and Eglinton’s glass offices and residential towers burst with the ‘young and eligible’ set, while quiet streets of detached family homes fan outward from the main crossroads. In many ways, midtown feels a lot like Vancouver… streamlined, modern, and devoid of anything marginalized; it has a wide variety of retail and food services for singles and families alike. (Plus it feels really safe!)
Restaurants and bars continue to spring up in the popular Eglinton and Bayview area, as development and condo costruction continues to intensify the area! But despite the flash a volume of fledgling newcomers, mainstays like The Granite Brewery & Tied House, who have held court in midtown 25 years before it was cool, are the true community favourites.
The Granite Brewery & Tied House is located at 245 Eglinton Ave East, was first opened in 1985 by Kevin Keefe in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He has trained at the Ringwood Brewery in England and saw an opportunity to bring the English style ales to Halifax. After several years of planning, Kevin’s brother, Ron, came on as a partner and opened the first Toronto location in 1991. Over the last 25 years in operation, they’ve grown there roster of ales to over fifteen seasonal and rotating drafts with a specialty in cask-conditioned ale. After a time, Ron’s daughter, Mary Beth Keefe, took over as head brewmaster, making this a true family business and labour of love!
Open 11:30am- midnight, this Brewery & Tied House has something for everyone. Offering a delicious brunch menu to a sophiaticated dinner options – and everything in between – diners can enjoy pairing their eats to some of the best in-house ales in the city!
And if you love their libations, you don’t have to leave empty-handed! The Granite has a beer store (think: alcoholic gift shop!) where patrons of the brew house can take thier favourites home with them, as well as kegs, coasters and other swag! How neat is that?!
Next time you’re near Eglinton and Mount Pleasant, take our recommendation and head to The Granite for some truly satisfying fare!
