Today, I visited brodflour, an urban mill and bakery that’s located in hip and trendy Liberty Village. I even chatted with the lovely Assistant General Manager, Jordyn Ferriss, who answered all my questions about what makes this hot spot so special!
brodflour is a local favourite among not only the community drawn in by the mouth-watering aromas, but also Instagram influencers. Why? For starters, their shop is deliciously bright, clean, and inviting; a flood of natural light to filter through their large windows and soaks the space. The white painted brick and various types of wood in pale use whisper that this is a natural earthy place – as does the large fig tree in the centre, built into a artfully curved bench. It’s their sleek Scandinavian ‘hygge’-inspired design (very on trend!) that creates the calming ambiance, agrees Jordyn. Their goal is to make brodflour and its offerings appealing to the eye; this serves the dual purpose of encouraging purchases and making customers more apt to share their visit on social media!
And they’re succeeding!
They also have an outdoor patio that’s perfect for those warm sunny days when breathing in the sun complements enjoying brodflour’s tasty treats and rich, steaming coffee. It’s the perfect place to rest and catch up after grabbing a scone and a cuppa with pals!
Speaking of their coffee, bean buffs will recognize the two roasters they use, exclusively: Monogram of Calgary and Java Roasters of Toronto.
So, what is brodflour they really about? Do they only make bread? If you’re picturing packaged products or even the quintessential crusty loaves found at your local supermarket, you couldn’t be further off! brodflour takes immense pride in the process of breadmaking; they have their own stone mill on site after all! From farm, to mill, to oven, they put love and care into their bread, ensuring its incredibly fresh and packed with nutrients! More of the good stuff, ya know? That’s what the world needs right now!
As I said above, it’s all about freshness. Their naturally leavened sourdough breads are always made with flour no older than one day old. This means their bread is always fresh, flavourful and YUM! Most of their breads are likely to still be warm is you arrive in the morning!
When I asked Jordyn what makes brodflour a go-to place, her response was that the bakery has something for everyone. They offer a variety of pastries, including vegan and dairy-based options, for everyone to enjoy. If someone is looking for something more substantial, they also provide their signature thick slabs, toasts, and sandwiches. Customers also enjoy their smoked salmon sandwich which comes on their Jerusalem bagel, which is another one of their best selling items on the menu.
Do you want to know what else makes this place so enjoyable? It’s not just their food, it’s the atmosphere! Brodflour definitely have regulars that come in every day, and when a bakery has that effect, then you know that this will be a good place to visit. While I was there, I got to chat with Carly, one of the front of the house managers. She helped me choose my morning treat. What did she recommend? Their famous Cardamom Knot, of course!
Jordyn shared that their Cardamom Knot is their take on a Swedish Kardemummabullar using their Red Fife flour and high-quality cardamom. How does it taste? It’s smooth, sweet, and oh so yummy. This alone is worth another trip!
But from what I was able to observe, when it comes to bread, brodflour is on point, and when you visit their shop, you’ll be buying the freshest loaf, cookie, bun, or baguette in the neighbourhood! As Jordyn explains: “the nutrients from the grain are left intact, and the flour itself has more flavour and better texture than those baked with bleached and processed flour”.
They also have Fridays reserved for Pizza night, so every week, for one night only, from 4:30pm to 9pm, you can get one of the tastiest pizzas in the city! Now that’s totally worth a third trip!
Jordyn shared that they want to be a one-stop-shop for people who love good coffee, good food, and good-for-you bread. I think that they are off to a fabulous start!
So make sure to visit them today! They’re the best thing since…. don’t make me say it!! 🙂
