Solero Mediterranean Bakery in The Junction

Junction / High Park / Bloor West / Swansea

It’s true that a sign of a buoyant neighbourhood is the number of new restaurants and shops popping up, but the character and heart comes from the restaurant and shops that have been there for years and still remain the go-to places for residents.

In the Junction, Solero Mediterranean Bakery is just the place to satisfy your sweet tooth and carb cravings. Located at 3029 Dundas Street West, at High Park Ave., the bakery has been serving The Junction area for over 30 years. About 10 years ago the ownership of the bakery changed hands becoming Solero Mediterranean Bakery as it is today, still offering the baked goods it was already producing with an addition of a new selection of traditional Mediterranean recipes.

We recently visited Solero on a sunny afternoon hoping to find something sweet or savoury to try for a mid-afternoon snack, but we did not expect so much to choose from. Solero has combined forces with Stari Grad Food Boutique making it a bakery and a delicatessen all in one. The deli area of the shop serves fresh cheeses and meats and the bakery offers variety of breads, pastries, cookies and cakes, so whether you crave a hearty sandwich, an apple turnover or poppy seed strudel to go nicely with a cup of Turkish coffee (they serve that too!) this place will not disappoint.

The purveyors of this local gem take pride in the fact that only fresh, quality ingredients are used to make the baked goods and every step necessary is taken to make sure the product tastes authentic. We couldn’t resist picking up a few of these home-made goodies. The bite-size, powdered sugar covered cookies with plum jam in the middle are light and scrumptious and make a perfect after dinner treat. If you’re a fan of phyllo pastry, you’ll love the many varieties of Burek such as meat, cheese, spinach or fruit filled. It’s been named by many as one of the best in the city.

Solero Bakery is one of those neighbourhood shops locals visit at least once a week. Having friends over? The variety of cheeses and smoked meats from the deli make for a fantastic Charcuterie board ensemble, and the sweet pastries will be all your guests will be talking about the next day!
