Explore Expansive Sherwood Park In Midtown Toronto

City Living, Midtown

Welcome to my blog on life in the big smoke, and my world of Toronto real estate.

When it comes to living an urban life of balance, an absolute ‘must’ is access to green space; it’s all about serenity, exercise and creating the mental calm that comes with getting grounded with nature.

For the urbanite, this means being in proximity to Toronto’s expansive, amenity-rich park system is a critical factor in improving your lifestyle.

One such spot is Sherwood Park that spreads out over 40 acres in Midtown Toronto, moving west from Bayview Avenue to Blythwood Road. The City of Toronto purchased the park in the early 1900s and it remains one of the larger parks in Toronto.

It is as pretty as it is peaceful, with something for everyone in your crowd; from your little ones to sporty types to hardcore hikers – everyone will find something to love!

Part of the appeal of green space has to be the presence of trees. In addition to their beauty and their role in providing clean air to enhance the outdoor experience, they are gentle giants that remind us of the quiet passing of time. Sherwood Park has loads of well-established trees that bend in leafy canopies for shade and respite. A pocket of the park is part of the Great lakes-St. Lawrence Forest, with trees that are over 150 years old. There are white pine, hemlock, beech, oak, and sugar maple, among others. The variety of plant and tree life makes a perfect setting for biodiversity.

Here are some shots of Sherwood Park through the generations, as it has evolved in use and in appearance over time.

Today, there are all kinds of ways to enjoy Sherwood Park – particularly for your four-legged family members! The awesome off-leash park here is known as one of the best in Toronto.

If you’ve got a dog that loves to run or adventure in a wooded setting, this is ideal, with fenced in trails for Fido to accompany you on your run.

Families will appreciate the wading pool and the playground, where the kids can run free, burn off energy and get fresh air, while meeting other playmates.

On many days in the spring and summer, you’ll hear the crack of a bat and the cheer of the crowd at a baseball or softball game at the baseball diamond.

Hikers will enjoy the trails and the tranquil setting through the largely wooded park. Throughout the park (particularly on some of the steeper pitches) boardwalks have been laid down. This not only helps accessibility for walkers, hikers and runners, it also helps to protect the wildlife, flora and fauna that lies beneath. Much of the park is bike-free because of the richness of the ecosystem that you’ll find in the wooded area.

It’s also the perfect spot for a picnic, with a picnic area and picnic shelter.

Sherwood Park truly embodies the point of urban green space: to provide an alternate universe of experience right in the middle of an urban neighbourhood!

If your neighbourhood of choice includes Midtown Toronto, this park will be one of your Go-To’s!
