If I lived in Harbord Village or Little Italy, Sam James Coffee Bar located at 1348 Dundas West, would be my daily morning pit-stop! As it is, I visit whenever I’m in the ‘hood!
Life can get busy, and sometimes we need some respite from the stresses of the day, even if it’s only for a few minutes. When the daily rush is getting us down, it’s life’s little pleasures like the perfect cup of java that have the power to turn things around and perk us back up again.
And here, you can feel the magic the moment you cross the threshold. The scent of roasted beans is heavenly!

For true coffee lovers, it’s not just about gulping down a cup of caffeine; the beans they choose make all the difference. Sam James is a small company and they focus on quality over quantity. In their own words, their bean selection is about “highlighting natural sweetness, depth, and body“.
They have a roasting facility right here in the city!!!

Here’s the part I love best of all: “We roast in small batches, hand sort for defects, and we taste test it. We do it consistently, and we do it daily!” While their bags of beans bare the Fair Trade logo, all of their product is purchased by a broker for above Fair Trade prices. Again: quality over quantity!
You know it’s good coffee when it’s already been sourced and sold by more than 10 establishments in Toronto! Not to mention, their locations have made top ten lists across the city, year after year!

If you frequent their storefront on Harbord, you know the staff exude helpfulness and warmth that creates a truly comforting and inviting neighbourhood vibe. The eclectic mix of furniture, art, and music playing softly in the background make it an ideal place to settle in, catch up with a friend or get some work done. (The space is small but there is some seating.)
And those wall treatments? So neat. The contrast of black finishes with wood accents is beautiful, and I adore the vintage-looking tile!!
Coincidentally, I’m a huge lover of Blackbird Baking Co and have ordered delivery of their bread and pastries a couple of times throughout the pandemic! They happen to be the supplier of treats and goodies that are available to purchase at the Sam James Coffee Harbord location!!
Check out the cool merch in their online shop, and, while we’re all stuck at home during the pandemic – order their beans online!
We love the ‘no rush’ vibe in this place and, like the best coffeehouses in Toronto, it is fundamentally a community living room, where neighbours and friends can meet and catch up!
