Raising Your Dog in Liberty Village

Animal House, City Living, King West / Niagara / Liberty Village

Just as the human population is growing in the neighbourhoods of downtown Toronto, so is the dog population. There are no exact numbers, but it is estimated that there are as many as 280 dogs in an average 40-storey downtown condo. That’s a lot of dogs just waiting to run, play and wag! Having pets around creates a happier community and in a neighbourhood like Liberty Village it is evident that downtown condo living has gone to the dogs – in a good way!

Liberty Village is considered a fairly new community, but as the residents began to move in with their four-legged friends in tow, it took no time for pet-friendly amenities and services to start popping up in the area. After all, just as we seek out the most raved-about cafe or a yoga studio for ourselves, we want our fur baby to have quality care, safe place to play, socialize, and be pampered. Here are a few essentials for raising a happy dog in Liberty Village.

Bill Johnston Park
This small linear park runs the length of north side Western Battery Road near King Street West and Strachan Ave in Liberty Village. This park may seem small at first, but it is idea for a morning or afternoon walk, especially if your dog prefers to be on the leash. For new dog owners, this is also a good spot to practice on-leash walking with your dog. There is a rest area with seating and a water fountain, and of course, the gorgeous view of the city to the east.

Pack of Paws
This doggie daycare is one of the more popular in Liberty Village. Located at 105 Jefferson Avenue, this compact facility received rave reviews thanks to their highly knowledgeable and caring staff and accommodating hours. If you’ve just moved to the area and don’t know where to take your dog, particularly if you’re worried about your dog in a daycare, Pack of Paws is a safe bet.

Global Pet Foods
This Liberty Village pet store makes finding general pet supplies easy. As busy pet owners, we’ve all experienced that moment of panic whey reaching into the dog food container only to find a few last crumbs of kibble. Luckily, a quick visit to Global Pet Foods at 75 Hanna Ave. and you’re back on top of your dog’s list of his favourite humans. This pet supply store offers a wide variety of unique and wholesome pet products so that pet parents can make informed decisions for the well-being of their companion.

Liberty Village Animal Hospital (LVAH)
Owned and operated by Dr. Ellen Kinzlis this is a full-service animal hospital conveniently located at 171 East Liberty Street, in the heart of Liberty Village. The clinic provides a full range of services in-house that helps your pet live a long and healthy life. The new clinic, launched in March 2016, is a spacious and bright environment, ensuring even the most timid pet is comfortable during their visit. Equipped with the latest technology and state of the art equipment, this medical facility ensures your pet receives the excellent care you are looking for. The in-house diagnostic system allows the staff to determine your pet’s needs in real-time so they can get them on their way to feeling better sooner.

For anyone moving into a new neighbourhood, it can be a challenge finding all the essentials for keeping your pup happy. But it is comforting to know that even within this dense and urban neighborhood, it’s possible to successfully and happily raise a dog.
