Mouthwatering Morsels At Mon K Patisserie

East York, Restaurants

What rhymes with ‘tasty’? Mon K Patisserie!  (Okay, not really – but you see where I’m going with this!)

Tiffanie here – Urbaneer’s baked good connoisseur! Do you know what I love most about life? Savoury & sweet confections! They are truly one of life’s simple pleasures. From warm, gooey chocolate chip cookies to flaky croissants, there’s nothing quite like the taste and smell of something freshly baked. This is the reason why I was so excited when Urbaneer asked me to write about Mon K Patisserie. While East York is not my usual stomping ground, I’m delighted to have discovered this special shop. Going for a stroll in the area, it seemed like a nice slice of suburbia – quieter and with families out and about!

They make some of the best croissants that I’ve ever eaten (I mean… just look at my happy face in the photo below!!)

Naomi and Ryosuke Kita own and operate this vibrant little bakery; they opened in June 2013 and have been making waves ever since with their delicious French-Japanese fusion pastries.

Ryosuke used to be the head chef at the popular but now-closed Celestin Restaurant in Mount Pleasant. He was also a pastry chef for the famous Thobors Boulangerie Patisserie Café. This gentleman knows his stuff – and it shows in the taste and presentation of the fare you’ll find at Mon K.

So, what makes their treats so delicious?

First, there’s the texture. Baking creates a unique texture that can’t be replicated by any other cooking method. Think of the flakiness of a croissant, or the softness of a freshly baked loaf of bread. And that’s exactly what you’ll find at mon K Patisserie. The first bite of their croissants gives you a strong sense of their talent.

***[Urbaneer tip: Some of their most popular items, like their Mont-Blanc cakes, are only available on Fridays and Saturdays, so call ahead of time to make sure what you want is available! ]***

Then, there’s the alluring aroma. The smell of something fresh out of the oven is irresistible, thanks to the chemical reactions that take place during baking. Ryosuke and Naomi Kita bake everything in-house daily in order to provide a sweet sensory experience.

**[Urbaneer tip: Ask them what their specials of the day are for secret items that may not be otherwise advertised! ]**

Finally, there’s the taste. Baking enhances the flavours of ingredients, bringing out their natural sweetness and depth. The sugar caramelizes, chocolate melts, and butter gives everything an irresistible richness. The best part? All of their baked goods are made perfectly without being overly sweet. Online reviews all agree on that!

I’m told that tourists to Toronto make a special trip to their store for their legendary Japanese cakes – definitely worth trying!
