What’s the most essential amenity near your home? Being close to great shopping and cafe culture? Proximity to green space? While these are no doubt important, I believe most urbanites would rank having easy, efficient access to Toronto’s public transit system at the top of their list.
With a legitimate pandemic on our hands, and stronger quarantine measures being instituted every day, many Torontonians are avoiding public transit altogether. While Toronto Public Health has advised that the risk of contracting COVID-19 on public transit is still present, since January, the TTC has been performing significant additional cleaning and disinfection of all public places with a focus on touch and grab points, such as buttons, railings, handles and straps. Every station, bus, streetcar, Wheel-Trans vehicle and train are receiving extra attention and sanitized overnight. However, riding the rocket still represents a greater health risk than driving, at the moment, so be pro-active and wear protective gloves.

In the – hopefully – near future, once COVID-19 is squarely in our rearview mirror, all operations will return to normal and the interconnected awesomeness that is our city’s transit system will once again be the most economical and efficient means to navigate Toronto! Unless, of course, you’re a cyclist!
While having a car is necessary for some, there are a lot of benefits to taking advantage of public transit. For one, it’s better for the planet. For another, long commutes take a toll on our mental and physical health, which I discuss in my post: What Are The Real Financial, Emotional And Health Costs Of Commuting? There are also a lot of other costs and hassles associated with driving, like gas, steep parking rates, and, of course, traffic congestion!
With gridlock increasingly common, living near Toronto’s public transit system is a feature that will continue to escalate in value as a lifestyle premium, making the purchase of a property in proximity to this urban amenity a wise investment. In fact, the closer you live to public transit – and if you can walk to a transit stop from your residence – the more appeal the property will have. Here’s how this amenity supports a higher real estate value in my post: The Value Of Public Transit In Toronto.
Toronto has an excellent transit system with frequent and far-reaching service. It’s even more convenient if you can plan ahead to make your commute or travel seamless. Did you know that you can access the TTC Mobile website via your cell phone or smartphone?
You can access the TTC’s Trip Planner directly to help map out your route via public transit. You can also receive service updates and route advisories in real-time to alert you to any potential delays, giving you the opportunity to reconsider your route.
Other important information like TTC schedules, routes and maps, as well as info on fares and how to purchase passes is at your fingertips!
You just simply direct your browser m.ttc.ca or mobile.ttc.ca or mymobile.ttc.ca. A side note: the TTC mobile website will display fully on your mobile device, but its desktop browser might be limited if you are accessing it on a mobile device.
While the TTC doesn’t charge for accessing their mobile site on your device, your carrier might – so you may want to double-check.
And keep your eyes peeled for our next post about helpful apps, and how they can make life easier for Torontonians!
