Seeking Good Schools In Toronto? There’s An App For That!

House And Home

It’s a well-known fact that proximity to amenities is an essential part of growing your real estate investment’s asset value. Proximity to good schools is one of these coveted attributes – one that future buyers would happily pay premiums for!

If you are a parent, knowing what schools are where (and things like walkability and childcare) is likely to be as near to the front of your home-buying conciousness as ‘number of bedrooms’ and ‘access to transit’. Even if you don’t have immediate need for schools in your household, a home within a good school district with reputable schools is always a smart, strategic buy.

Short of seeing the school bus stop in front of your home, how do you know what schools are available to residents of a particular address?

Thankfully, in our digital age, it’s pretty easy to find out.

Findschool.ca is a great resource to learn about schools in a neighbourhood. Enter a home’s address to get school programs determined by the school attendance boundary in the GTA. 10 school boards (over 1800 schools) are included.  You can also get information about school rankings from the Fraser Institute and EQAO results.

Use of this resource is free, up to 5 address searches a day. If you want more in-depth information, memberships of varying lengths and prices are available that provide unlimited searches as well as access to additional information. There are also additional search functionalities, like searching with a school name or with a GPS position. You can find out about French Immersion boundaries and compare and contrast offerings at nearby schools.

Another helpful tool is the free School Locator app, for Apple devices. It is a quick way to get the info that you need about the schools around you. This app serves Toronto and the GTA and will be rolled out to the rest of the country soon.

To use, simply enter a home’s MLS code or the home’s address, and you’ll get the list of schools serviced by that address.  You can also use a “current location” feature. Also with this app you can get information about class sizes, Fraser Institute Rankings, and more!
