Dining In Style At Yorkville’s Sassafraz

City Living, Restaurants, Yorkville / Summerhill / Rosedale

Never underestimate the sweet pleasure of an excellent meal; truly good food can elevate your mood and remind you of the simple pleasures in life. Throw in a beautiful atmosphere and engaging company, and youd be hard-pressed to find anything more satisfying.

This is what I recently confirmed while dining with my wonderful clients at Yorkville restaurant Sassafraz, which embodies that perfect balance between comfort and chic. Their tagline of “a sense of place and someplace else” is telling. Housed in what were once Victorian townhouses but substantially transformed into a contemporary environment, this special spot meshes in naturally with this stylish neighbourhood. However, you soon realize that, although it very much blends into the streetscape as a fixture, it emits a certain quality that makes it stand out, literally and on an experiential level. It’s inclusive because of its warmth but exclusive because of the dining, ambience and service. It buzzes with contemporary cool and is the perfect spot, no matter if you are stopping by for a glass of wine, to hear some great music or to celebrate an occasion.

Live music in the S-café on Friday nights, an understated, elegant dining room inspired by Soho-esque decor, creative Canadian cuisine,  a towering wine cellar and impressive cocktail menu, fun patio and charming environs make this a popular choice with locals and is a draw for those across the city .In fact, you never know who will stop by. It’s touted as one of Toronto’s “secret spots for celebrity dining”, as is La Societe On Bloor Street West On Toronto’s Mink Mile.

This restaurant is indeed a fixture in Yorkville, having been part of the neighbourhood for two decades +. It recently underwent a facelift, trading it its signature yellow hues for a more earthy palette, with greys and sage tones. Although the sunny yellow is gone, it is still very much an icon at the centre of the Yorkvillian universe, noted as one of Yorkville’s best restaurants!

The menu is ever-changing here, with Chef Geoff Webb favouring seasonal fare and supporting local purveyors and farmers, meaning a steady stream of fresh, exciting flavours and dishes to appease a broad number of palates. Check the latest line up here!
