We adore the Distillery District, with its exquisite Victorian Industrial Architecture and a spirit that is alive with arts and culture! Walking through the cobblestone streets of the Distillery on my way to catch the 504 Streetcar, I love to stop in at one of my favourite coffee cafes – Balzac’s! Opened in 2002, it was Balzac’s second location, and is tucked into the city’s only pedestrian village neighbourhood!
Boasting some of Toronto’s finest boutiques, galleries, and food purveyors, it draws locals and tourists alike with its 19th-century buildings that once housed a large whiskey distillery and with festive celebrations – like Toronto’s famous Christmas Market! This neighbourhood stand out from the rest, and has a spirit and vibe you won’t find anywhere else in Toronto!
Balzac’s has transformed a Pump House (circa 1895) into a two-storey Grand Parisian style café. A giant Vaudeville chandelier casts a soft glow for sitting back and watching the bustling activity of this unique district. This location is very unique because not only is it a coffee shop by day, but can be rented out as a rental space in the evening, for weddings, social events, book launches and fundraisers.
Diana Olsen in Stratford, Ontario, first brought Balzac’s Coffee Roasters to life. Inspired by the Grand Cafes of Paris, but with Canadian Contemporary Culture. Proudly Canadian, Balzac’s has 14 distinct and beloved locations across Ontario. What distinguishes Balzac’s from the rest is that every café is specifically designed to embody the cultural nuances and historical significance of the location it’s in.
Don’t you adore sitting on a patio with a latté and baked treats?! We also love perching up on the second floor, looking down through the chandelier and at the artwork lining the walls from local artists. Balzac’s wheelchair accessible Distillery District location is tucked away at 1 Trinity Street.
Open Monday to Sunday from 8am- 7pm!
