The Drake General Store On Queen West

Queen West

If one’s busy-as-a-bee schedule will allow, nothing follows a delicious breakfast treat at the Drake Cafe better than an opportunity for the curious to peruse the wonderful and playful array of goods both hard and soft from Canada and abroad at the renowned Drake Hotel General Store.

Situated at 1144 Queen Street West, the Drake General Store is just one door east of its namesake, the Drake Hotel, with additional locations on Bathurst near King West, and in Rosedale on Yonge north of Crescent. We’d be remiss if we did not mention DGS’s most recent arrival at 1140 Queen West: Hot Hunt (their unique antique concept space which serves up a curated cornucopia of vintage items displayed alongside newly manufactured treasures). It’s the ideal destination if you’re in the mood to embark upon a vintage treasure hunt.

If there’s a single thread which stitches together the wild ride through time one experiences once across the threshold, it’s the wide range of Canadiana, sometimes kitschy, sometimes retro, always speaking to an authentic Canadian tradition and experience, and at times completely unexpected. Where else in Toronto can one find the warm and cuddly-soft woolen blankets and throws from Archibald MacAusland’s Woolen Mills in Bloomfield, Prince Edward Island?

There is much in the realm of fun and frivolous at the Drake General Store, be it original early ’80’s digital watches, vinyl shirt pocket ball-point pen holders, blackboard finish globes perfect for plotting your plan for world-domination (I purchased six) or the many treasures in stock produced by some of Toronto’s (and Canada’s) very own home-grown talent.

Amongst our fave items? The Frida Kahlo paper-doll set for only $11.95, perfect for hours of artful outfit entertainment. Or the dreamy and beautifully hand-embroidered Wingtips Pillow in linen by Brookly’s boutique design house Coral and Tusk, $95. highly recommends you stop in for a visit and blast to the past sometime soon!

The Drake General Store now has three Toronto locations, plus Hot Hunt!
