Indulgently Pampered At ‘Her Majesty’s Pleasure’ On King West

King West / Niagara / Liberty Village

Do you love a little beauty boost like Monika does? Here's her adoration for 'Her Majesty's Pleasure' On King Street West!

When life gets hectic, I find it’s important to carve out a little “me” time. So what better way is there to reward yourself for all your hard work than with an afternoon of pampering? Speaking from experience, even if you don’t have time for a full-on spa day, even a short break for a fresh manicure, a rejuvenating facial or an photo-worthy hair blowout will make you feel like a million bucks and ready to take on the world. In the King West Neighbourhood, the place that will add a little extra bounce in your step is Her Majesty’s Pleasure.

Located at 556 King Street West – just east of Portland Street on the ground level of the Fashion House condominium building – Her Majesty’s Pleasure (HMP) is a salon-meets-cafe hybrid that is equal parts spa, boutique, and bar. The brainchild of Sara Kardan and Jeff Armstrong, the salon opened its doors in October 2014 as a new concept for Toronto. Here, guests can have their nails done at the manicure bar, recline in a cozy chair for a pedicure, or enjoy a blow dry or facial while sipping on a freshly squeezed juice, coffee, a glass of bubbly or one of the signature cocktails. As a non-traditional venue, it was a challenge to obtain a liquor license, and although it took three years, the owners collected all the neighbourhood signatures they needed to take their dream to court, and win approvals. Thank goodness because the cocktails are delicious!

From the design of the interior to the attention to detail in the offered services, this place will make you feel great and look amazing. The high ceilings, light colour schemes and wall of windows make this contemporary venue indulging and inviting. Every time I walk in, I feel like I’ve stepped into a cool, Parisian cafe. To the right, the large bar with a marble counter and copper bar stools strike a welcoming note. The banquette along the window to the left with small bistro tables is a perfect spot to enjoy a bevy before or after an appointment or catch up with a friend, and the glass wall behind the bar looking into the spa services area allows for a peak of what’s to come.

On a recent Sunday afternoon the place was buzzing. Groups of patrons are gathered on the banquettes waiting for their appointment while the bar stools are occupied with customers in flip-flops sipping on cocktails while their freshly-painted toes dried to perfection. A few fashionable gentlemen chat with the bar tender while enjoying an Old Fashioned. On the other side of the room, after picking my colour of choice from a wall of nail polish, I take a seat at the high-top manicure bar and sip my Margarita while the lovely manicurist transforms my “Plain Jane” nails into ten powder-pink gems that will help kick off the week in style.

This is definitely a girl's “happy place”! The perfect place for special occasions like birthdays, bachelorette parties and bridal showers. HMP offers special packages and hosts private events for anyone looking to take the experience to another level. Can you imagine having your next birthday bash here? Cocktails, music and manicures, oh my!
