Great Events To See Right Now!

The City Of Culture

October 14, 2011

I know... we're all victims of it. We live in our big cities boasting about all the cultural amenities at our disposal, but in the complacency of our day to day lives we miss some great experiences. Last year I said "Enough!" and vowed to celebrate as much of our amazing city as possible. In the past month I've been theatrical watching Kim Cattrall and Paul Gross star in Noel Coward's 'Private Lives' at The Royal Alexandra Theatre, delighted in the circus antics of Cirque Du Soleil's 'Totem', and pulled as close to an all-nighter as I could on the streets with 'Nuit Blanche'. These are all worthy of your attendance... while they last that is!

Keeping the culture momentum, last night I went to the Canadian Opera Company's spectacular extravaganza of Verdi's 'Rigoletto'!

As the story goes, the Duke lives a dissolute existence, caring little for the lives he destroys in the process. His jester, Rigoletto, knows his employer’s proclivities all too well and obsessively guards his daughter from the Duke. When she is cruelly seduced and deceived, Rigoletto vows to avenge her, with devastating consequences.

The set was visually arresting (photos courtesy of COC), the orchestra and voices mesmerizing, and the story devastatingly heartbreaking. How Opera is that?" Boo hoo. Sniff! Sniff!

As is my tradition, no evening at the Opera is complete without a visit to Nota Bene at 180 Queen Street West (http://notabenerestaurant.com/) after a show. I love their onion rings and roasted beet salad!
