Summer On The Beach

Beach Time On PEI

August 14, 2011

As far as I'm concerned, summer leisure should always include time relaxing by water. This year I enjoyed hiking, swimming and sun-tanning at Prince Edward Island's breathtaking National Park.

This ocean treasure is situated along the island's north shore, fronting the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Being approximately 60 km in length and ranging from several hundred metres to several kilometres in width, the park's mandate includes the protection of many broad sand beaches, sand dunes and both freshwater wetlands and saltmarshes.

One day we traveled to Brackley Beach which is home to sand dunes, barrier islands and sandspits, beaches, sandstone cliffs, wetlands and forests. These diverse habitats provide a home for a variety of plants and animals, including the threatened Gulf of Saint Lawrence Aster and the endangered Piping Plover.

Below are some photos showing the moody Brackley Beach Park earlier this week during a windy cloudy afternoon.

Originally established in 1937, an extension was added to the park in 1998 when an extensive sand dune system in Greenwich was transferred from the provincial government to Parks Canada. The Prince Edward Island National Park also includes Green Gables, which was the childhood inspiration for the Anne Of Green Gables novels by author Lucy Maud Montgomery, as well as Dalway-by-the-sea, a Victorian era mansion currently operated as an inn.

Greenwich has some amazing hikes that take you through a series of natural habitats, including one route that includes a floating boardwalk through saltwater marshes connecting to the dunes and a stunning white sand beach. Here are some snaps taken today!

Nothing beats a day on water! And Prince Edward Island is one amazing destination for a summer escape. Love!
